Why Satellite?

Our satellite broadband is the most easy-to-install, easy-to-use, reliable, affordable service for consumers who cannot get cable or DSL.

What is the difference between DSL, Cable and satellite broadband?

DSL operates over existing phone lines, however, it is distance limited.  DSL typically only extends approximately three miles from each DSL-equipped central office location.  High-speed cable service requires expensive network upgrades which have not been made available in all areas.  With satellite broadband, as long as you have a clear view of the southeastern sky, you can receive the signal.  The downstream comes into your computer through your satellite dish, not back through your telephone line.

What is the difference between my dial-up and satellite broadband?

A tremendous time savings to you!  Your dial-up brings back information from websites to your computer from 5-56kbps, while the satellite will bring the same information to your computer from 320-400kbps. Even if the current phone lines in your area are of poor quality, satellite will still allow you to experience lighting fast downloads.  Most of the information is sent to your computer via the satellite as opposed to over the telephone line.

Here's how it works:

An LighwWay satellite dish is installed at your home or business so it faces the southeastern sky. A cable is run from the dish to an internal satellite receiver (PCI) card that is easily installed in your computer. The system works by giving you a 400K high-speed connection when you are retrieving files from the Internet; for example, when you view a Web page, read your email, or download a file. Your computer is also connected via a normal modem to your telephone line and the Internet.  “Requests” to the Internet are sent over this dial-up connection.

What are the advantages of a "one way" over a "two way" satellite system?

Both "one-way" and "two-way" satellite services offer similar upload and download speeds.  However, there are some differences:

Easy-to-use:  Our "one-way" satellite service uses proven industry-standard technologies.  Current "two-way" services have been adapted from proprietary platforms making the integration and use of certain software and applications more difficult.  Examples include POP3 email, FTP, and VPN applications.

Affordable: Our "one-way" satellite service and system is far less expensive than currently available "two-way" services and systems.

Reliable: Severe weather conditions can affect any satellite-based system.  Users of a "two-way" satellite system can experience a complete loss of connection during severe conditions.  A "one-way" satellite system uses both a satellite link and a terrestrial telephone link to the Internet.  Therefore, if your satellite connection is terminated, you can immediately reconnect via dial-up.
